Birmingham Post-Herald, Friday, May 23, 2003 D5 NATION Biological clock directs monarch butterflies By LEE BOWMAN SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE Monarch butterflies rely on an internal clock to help them navigate by the sun during their fall migrations from eastern and central North America to a small region of central Mexico, researchers report in a new study. By studying monarchs in a specially designed flight simulator, scientists at the University of Massachusetts have gathered what they 1 believe is the first direct evidence that a natural clock plays an essential role in celestial navigation in animals. "We have shown the requirement of the circadian clock for monarch butterfly navigation," said Steven Reppert, senior author of the study published today in the journal "When the clock is disrupted, monarchs are unable to orient toward Mexico. Without proper navigation, their migration to the south wouldn't occur and that generation of butterflies would not survive." In the fall, monarchs living east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States and Canada travel up to 3,000 miles to winter in a small cluster of fir forests on mountaintops in central Mexico. But only every fourth or fifth generation of monarch makes the trip, indicating the urge to migrate is instinctive.

The butterflies that migrate are mature, but programmed to delay reproduction until the following spring, and may also carry special fat-storing genes that allow them to conserve energy on long flights. The clock is "entrained" to the daily light cycle through specialized -sensitive cells. Reppert and his colleagues found a common clock gene, called per, is also part of the monarch's circadian clock. They found constant exposure to light disrupted the cycling of the gene's expression, and also affected the time of day that butterflies emerged from their chrysalises, which has been shown to indicate circadian time-keeping in other insects.

"Monarch butterfly navigation seems to involve the interaction between a clock and a compass. This makes monarch navigation a bit simpler than navigation in foraging many years. Understanding how the internal clock guides navigation in monarchs could provide a model for studying navigation by other animals, from bees and ants to songbirds. "Increasing knowledge of the genetic makeup of the monarch circadian clock will help tease apart the entire migratory process, a process that remains one of the great mysteries of biology," Reppert said.
