International Yoga Day 2024: Theme, Pledge Certificate and Why it is Celebrated? (2024)

Every year on June 21st, the world comes together to celebrate International Yoga Day. This global phenomenon recognises the ancient Indian practice of yoga and its profound impact on physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Yoga, derived from the Sanskrit word "yuj," meaning "to yoke" or "to unite," and it embodies the philosophy of bringing harmony to the mind, body, and spirit. It's more than just physical postures, as it is a holistic approach to health that integrates breathing exercises, meditation, and ethical principles.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, “The word ‘Yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’, meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite’. As per Yogic scriptures the practice of Yoga leads to the union of individual consciousness with that of the Universal Consciousness, indicating a perfect harmony between the mind and body, Man & Nature.”

As we mark the 10th International Day of Yoga, I urge everyone to make it a part of their daily lives. Yoga fosters strength, good health and wellness. Wonderful to join this year's programme in Srinagar. https://t.co/oYonWze6QU

Why is International Yoga Day Celebrated?

International Yoga Day shines a light on the positive impact yoga can have on our lives. From building strength and flexibility to promoting relaxation and stress reduction, yoga caters to individuals of all ages and abilities. It's a practice that cultivates mindfulness, improves focus, and fosters inner peace.

Secondly, International Yoga Day serves as a day of recognition. We celebrate the rich history and enduring legacy of this ancient Indian tradition. Yoga's philosophy emphasizes the connection between mind, body, and spirit, offering a path to self-discovery and personal growth.

Here's a breakdown of the reasons behind celebrating Yoga Day:

  • Ancient Tradition: Yoga is a practice that originated in India thousands of years ago. Celebrating it acknowledges its historical significance.
  • Holistic Wellness: Yoga goes beyond physical exercise. It incorporates mental and spiritual aspects, promoting a sense of overall well-being.
  • Global Appeal: Yoga's popularity has grown tremendously worldwide in recent times. The day celebrates its universal acceptance.

In September 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). During his speech, he proposed establishing an annual International Day of Yoga.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted yoga's well-being benefits and its holistic approach to health. He also suggested June 21st as the ideal date for the celebration because it holds significance in many cultures and is the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.

The proposal gained momentum, and the UN adopted a resolution in December 2014, officially declaring June 21st as the International Day of Yoga. A record-breaking 175 member states endorsed the resolution.

The UN mentions: “The draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga was proposed by India and endorsed by a record 175 member states. The proposal was first introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address during the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly, in which he said: “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action ... a holistic approach [that] is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.”

“The resolution notes “the importance of individuals and populations making healthier choices and following lifestyle patterns that foster good health.” In this regard, the World Health Organization has also urged its member states to help their citizens reduce physical inactivity,” it adds.
