What is the difference between R55 and R56 MINI? ›

The R55 is a slightly larger MINI but still retains the same go-kart handling that makes the car so appealing. For modding, the R55 can have the same engine upgrades as the R56.

Convertibles (R52, R57, F57, and F67 models) are the 2 door MINI that seats 4 and have a convertible soft top. Clubman (R55 and F54 models) are the slightly longer than the hardtop MINI model and have either the 3rd door on one side (or 4 door type released in 2016).

With the key in the ignition, but in the off position, press and hold down the odometer reset button with one hand. While holding the button down, switch the key in the ignition to position 1 (first click) with the other hand. The screen will have a number and the word “TEST”.

One common issue is with the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, which is codenamed N14. This has a known issue with the timing chain tensioner. Another engine issue with the Mini concerns the turbocharger wastegate vacuum valve, which can fail and cause the car to run poorly.

Convertible – R57 (2009 – 2015)

The second generation model follows in the same footsteps as the R52 but with some key improvements mostly shared with the rest of the second gen MINI – although with the convertible there were many improvements to the cars rigidity, refinement and hood mechanisms.

ECU reset refers to the process of clearing or resetting the learned adaptive values and settings in the engine control unit. This process is also known as ECM (Engine Control Module) reset or PCM (Powertrain Control Module) reset.

Whenever you reset your ECM, then you remove the long term memory of the car's computer memory. The process deletes error codes useful when conducting mechanical tests on your vehicle. The data becomes the default, and neutral and idle speed, spark, and fuel logs are no longer available.

You may have a rough idle, poor acceleration, stalling or single to multiple cylinder misfires. If you have any of these symptoms, check for valve residue build-up. Be sure the intake valves are 100% closed on the cylinder you are cleaning before beginning the cleaning process.

BUT The EASIEST way to tell apart the R56 and the F56 is to look at the lug bolts. If there are 4 bolts at each wheel, you have the R56. If there are 5 bolts at each wheel, you have the F56.

MINI R56 hatchback

The most common of the second generation shapes – the 3 door hatchback; the iconic MINI shape. This model ran from 2007 to 2013 and as of August 2010 onwards had a 'mid-life' facelift with a number of under-the-skin changes – mainly they started using BMW sourced engines for the diesel cars.

The R53 was quicker from the off, felt much more in touch with the road (not that the R56 didn't), felt nimbler in the twisty bits but was not as refined in traffic! The whine from the S/C and pops and bangs from the exhaust made the car feel more 'alive' and as soon as I got back to the dealer I put a deposit on it.
