The lake sits at 8,200 feet in elevation and covers 1,234 acres, with a maximum depth of 66 feet. Much of the land surrounding the lake is managed by the Dixie National Forest (DNF) and the area supports three DNF campgrounds, several private marinas/resorts, and a general store.

Night crawlers and PowerBait are the top choices among Panguitch Lake anglers. Plastic lures, casting spoons, and spinners from shore or a boat can be effective. Fly fishers strip leech patterns in black, olive, and brown. A sinking line helps reach the deeper fish.

You may catch and keep up to four rainbow trout of any size at Scofield. If you catch a trout that is not a rainbow—and it ranges from 15–22 inches—you must release it. The limit is 4 trout; 2 may be cutthroat or tiger trout under 15 inches, and no more than 1 may be a cutthroat or tiger trout over 22 inches.

Originally a natural body of water covering almost 800 acres, Panguitch Lake became a reservoir when the 28-foot-high dam was completed in 1872, expanding to more than 1,200 acres. According to the Utah Division of Water Resources, Panguitch Lake is 87% full and holds about 19,500 acre-feet of water.

Still, avoid leaving your boat in the water for longer than a month to help prevent damage. Lake weeds, mollusks and algae will all spread over your boat if allowed — storing your boat when not in use helps prevent damage to the ecosystem.

Rich History, Festivals and Events. Panguitch, a national historic district, traces its roots to early Mormon settlers. You can view beautiful red brick homes and buildings, scattered throughout the community, built using bricks kilned from iron-rich clay by these early pioneers.

The reservoir was created when Cutler Dam was built in 1927 by Utah Power and Light, now a part of Pacific Corp. The narrow lake, fed mainly by the Bear, Logan and Little Bear rivers, in addition to smaller, local tributaries, meanders 12 miles with an average depth of about six feet.

Description: Pierce Lake covers a former rock quarry and much of the lower end was cut through solid rock. The lake has a maximum depth of 36 feet with an average depth of 12.5 feet.
