I want to share my learnings from a long road trip in my EV recently. No, it's not a Tesla. Hyundai Ioniq 6 AWD!!First the basics:1. Gas powered vehicles have a 12-volt battery that runs some of the accessories like the radio/interior fans/ac compressors, apart from helping start the vehicle. That battery gets re-charged using the alternator. EV on the other hand relies only on the battery for everything.2. Drag is resistance of a moving body through a fluid such as air. Drag is proportional to the square of the velocity of the moving body. That means the drag at 85 mph is lot higher than at 65 mph! We'll see why that makes a huge impact on the EV range later.3. My trip was in the Rockies of CO/UT. Lots of mountain passes to climb and long stretches of road with steady up hill. That means not much chance for an EV for regenerative re-charge gain. So, let's highlight the good parts of driving an EV for the long road:1. The drive was fun and smooth! The car goes like the wind and even at high speeds no rattles and shakes at all. On long open roads even clocking 100 mph was quiet and smooth2. There were quite a few EV Chargers just off the highways at gas stations. Nice clean restrooms and drink/snacks for pick-me-ups if needed. All of these locations also provided windshield cleaning fluid with squeezes to clean up the dead bugs off the windshield. Nice perk indeed!!3. Since we have to stop for re-charge every 2-2.5 hours or so (really 130-150 miles) I consider that as a safety feature to stretch out and to take a break. If you have more than 1 person driving, good to swap the drivers as well at that time for fresh start. So, what's the downside then?? Let's list them out here:1. Before embarking on your journey planning your re-charge stops is very important. Need to map out exactly where your stops will be and to take into account the re-charging time. In a typical day long drive of 8-hrs in a gas-powered vehicle quickly translates into 10-11 hrs long in EV due to the re-charging time and frequent charging.2. Unlike the density of gas stations, EV chargers are sparse. Especially in the West with lot of rural or high-country locales, EV chargers are far apart. Since the AC/Fans/Radio runs on the battery and in the west with a steady up hill on long stretches, the range of the EV car (80-85%) battery capacity is only about 130-150 miles. Don't rely on the range you get in the urban settings for the highway. Our EV typically gives around 200 miles in the urban setting.3. The drag of the Vehicle is dramatically higher at highway speeds, so the battery drains faster especially if you are also running the AC. Remember from the basics, we know that the drag is proportional to the square of the speed of the vehicle.Would I do it again? Perhaps not until I see higher charger density along the highways. This is definitely the future and with time I'm hopeful the density will improve quickly.

Happy Birthday America!! Enjoy the July 4th safely and with your family and friends. With freedom also comes responsibility. Most immigrants like me know the responsibilities and take it to heart. We are always on the right side of the law and contribute to the society. We have raised wonderful future citizens in our progeny and inculcate important values of hard work, unity, family and positive contributions to society.I'm very grateful to these United States for adopting me and providing me many opportunities to excel in what I'm good at namely data management and data security. Thank you for accepting me with respect! In the recent onslaught of people pouring across the southern border from all over the world, no one - politicos, govt officials, other citizens are talking about legal immigrants who contribute to society. Most are highly educated, creating jobs and innovating to keep America the shining city on the hill! They have always followed the laws and have been patiently waiting in the queue for years to get their status adjusted. Did you know the limit to process green cards in a year is only 140,000 in employment category for all countries! There are also max 7% per country limits which hasn't changed since 1990.In the meantime, these contributors are always worried that they may have to leave US if their current visa status expires, or they get laid off due to downturn in the economy. Canada has been pro-active in attracting such talent with immediate green cards. I don't understand why US Govt doesn't give long term visas once you've already been vetted while they are waiting for the per country visa counts to become current. In the 1960s and 70s they did provide Green Cards to foreign students who graduated from American Universities. Look at the dates of the final visa applicants as of June 2024 (Source UCSIS Visa Bulletin):People have to wait decades at the current pace to get the green cards. America we can do better and encourage legal immigration!

Happy Juneteenth day! Not sure why it took so long to commemorate this day but I'm glad it is now recognized with a public holiday. It should be a day of liberation from fear and bias and strive for a just and equitable society. Like MLK succinctly said that we should be judged for our abilities and contributions to society rather than the color of our skins. I've had my epiphany many decades ago that all are equal in the eyes of whatever your faith/beliefs/religion is and given an opportunity for the qualified person, each and every one will be responsible to deliver outcomes that are better for the society and country.Let us enjoy our emancipation from things that divide us and unite to make opportunities available for all to thrive! Our nation has come out admirably through a civil war before. Let us learn from history and be wiser.

There's a new kid on the block that I want to talk about today. As you have already heard that Veritas announced a while back that it was splitting into two companies. The data protection with its flagship NetBackup product will eventually merge with Cohesity. The rest of the portfolio comprising of the data storage management, information governance and the SMB focused data protection product Backup Exec was going to get spun off as an independent entity under the leadership of Lawrence Wong. Until now, it was code named DataCo in all financial presentations and such. Now we know the new name for that entity -ARCTERA.IO. Interesting name choice. The new "start-up" will have around $500 millions in revenue and about 1500 employees. Lot of existing customers for sure. I'm interested to know how the new company will weave a common vision as the business that make up its portfolio is so different with very little overlap. Lawrence Wong has publicly stated that each line of business will have its own P&L responsiblity so I'm thinking if a buyer comes along with an attractive offer for each of the portfolio's they'd be open to offload it. We shall wait and watch how the new landscape for not only for Arctera.io looks like but also for the merged Cohesity/Veritas NetBackup shapes up.

Shall we talk about SaaS applications and the need to protect them today? Enterprises are rapidly adopting SaaS applications as it simplifies operations without requiring any infrastructure on-prem or upgrades or maintenance for hw and sw to worry about. The most well-known SaaS application is M365 with multiple modules like Teams, Exchange and Share Point Online as a bundle. There are other SaaS applications like Salesforce, GSuite, Entra ID (aka Azure AD), ServiceNow, Workday, etc that Enteprises are rapidly adopting. However, all these applications are now a new threat vector for the bad actors to enter with malicious intent. Why? All SaaS and Cloud Sercive Providers (CSPs) have a shared responsibility model. In a shared responsibility model, SaaS and CSPs are responsible only for the availability OF the cloud and its infrastructure but not the data IN the cloud. That means enterprises are required to have a solution to protect that data and be able to recover it for discovery/compliance/large scale attacks. Sure the CSPs may replicate the data in the availability zones and probably provide a re-cycle bin to recover smalls amounts of data but that is not a sound backup and recovery solution. You also need to back up the data to an immutable storage and with air gap into a different tenant. That's where solutions from Veritas and Cohesity become critical to protect you from bad actors. Both the vendors provide backups of the M365 modules, but Veritas has a few other SaaS products that it supports. It supports additionally Entra ID, G-Suite, Salesforce. The only downside is its's a separate offering from the flagship data protection product NetBackup with its own interface. There is some minor integration but not very useful. It'll be interesting to see how this will evolve in the merged company when Cohesity and Veritas NetBackup come together. I really hope they simplify the interface with 1 GUI and a bundled license for all the workloads whether they are on-prem, Cloud or SaaS.Eagerly awaiting to see the product strategy of the combined company.Link to Microsoft's Shared Responsibility model below:

AI and Large Language Models (LLM) are getting all the attention these days and at times for probably the wrong reasons with fears of job losses and fake news targeting the gullible. However, I believe if AI & LLM is used properly it can lead to increasing productivity and enabling innovation. The question to ask then is should AI and LLM be deployed in Data Protection and managing compliance or fighting ransomware in the enterprise. You see enterprise data backup and recovery is a true data lake with a centralized secondary copy of all data from workloads across the enterprise - on-prem workloads, SaaS workloads like M365 and the cloud workloads. It offers a very rich meta data as well as history over time. The quality of the data lake is also excellent assuming that the enterprise backups are very successful with a high 98%+ success rate consistently! One approach to leverage the data lake is for compliance and to determine if there are any ransomware in the backup data. One could use natural language to query and have an interactive multi-modal conversation to find for example all HIPPA or PII data locations and if that data is backed up consistently. In addition, we could also ask who can access that data and if that data is stored securely in an immutable storage. Many possibilities with all kinds of natural language that anyone in compliance or management can quickly get to without requiring reports or knowing the system with its commands to generate the necessary data or doing back and forth with scripts modifications as to what the output should look like. So, is any of the backup software vendors delivering this today?? Indeed! Cohesity GAIA is a complementary solution that offers exactly that type of natural language capabilities. You can learn more from the link below!NetX Information Systems has competencies with engineering expertise to deliver these services for the enterprise. We are ready to help enterprises with your compliance needs from both Cohesity and Veritas Technologies.Next time we will cover the other approach that Veritas is taking to deliver operational simplicity with AI/LLM models.https://lnkd.in/gbKFuARQ

We are coming up to Memorial Day weekend. I want to take this opportunity to thank all former and serving members in uniform. Thank you for your service and keeping us safe. I'm a globalist and so want to say thank you to all uniformed members in all democracies that keep the peace. In particular, I also want to acknowledge the great sacrifices that service members in Bharat (India) perform in difficult conditions with fewer resources to keep the large diverse country safe.Salute to you all!Talking of safety, I want to ask how many of us have enabled Multi Factor Authentication in our lives for important assets like banking, brokerages, health records, mortgages, credit cards, tax records and personal digital wallets? It's very easy to configure it and I urge everyone to take a few minutes to set it up. Why? Easiest to protect yourselves from scams and bad actors trying to wipe off your savings. More on this and the ransomware angle next time. Enjoy the time off and please thank the service members in our communities!
