This week we were grateful to be joined in our Melbourne showroom by Garrie O'Toole from Dementia Australia who conducted a ‘Designing for Dementia’ workshop, attended by Shaw Contract associates, architects and designers from MDC Interior Concepts, Smith + Tracey Architects, Spowers and Silver Thomas Hanley (STH) , as well as healthcare specialists and managers of aged care and senior living facilities BASScare Aged Care Services, TLC Aged Care, Cumberland View and Villa Maria Catholic Homes.Dementia describes a collection of symptoms caused by disorders affecting the brain. The effects of dementia vary, but generally, dementia affects your mood, memory, thinking and behaviour. Dementia can happen to anybody, but it is much more common after the age of 65.The workshop, Enabling EDIE, is an immersive workshop that enables participants to see the world through the eyes of a person living with dementia. Utilising virtual reality technology this workshop enhances the knowledge of dementia whilst exploring enablement strategies to support a person with dementia to live more confidently.The workshop helps inform design that develops insight and empathy, and a better understanding the symptoms and impact of dementia in the built environment. For example, elements such as wayfinding and the use of contrasting materials can both cause disorientation when used incorrectly but also eliminate barriers and confusion when used in an informed way. Over 70% of people entering aged care will have either dementia or another cognitive disability, by considering who we are designing for in these environments we can help provide dignity and purpose. Last week we were proud supporting partners of the Green Building Council of Australia's Green Building Day in Brisbane. In the below article, we explore some of our key learnings from the day, such as the key theme of circularity in Dexus Waterfront Brisbane project, designed by fjcstudio and Arkhefield and delivered by John Holland; innovation and excellence in circularity in construction with Built. and Coreo's guide to writing a Building Disassembly Plan, and the presentation of our own case study 'Circularity at Scale' - our 24-year journey practicing a regenerative, closed-loop approach to sustainability through Cradle to Cradle design.

A look back at AMPLIFY: Inclusion, Learning, Place. The 22nd Annual Learning Environments Australasia Conference, held in Melbourne from 15-17 May 2024.The conference spanned three days of keynote speeches, panel discussions, trade exhibitions and site tours of educational facilities across Melbourne, focused on the conference pillars of inclusion, learning, and place. We explored the wide-ranging idea of ‘inclusion’ with a trauma-informed design workshop and tour to Hester Hornbrook Academy in Sunshine, designed by Gray Puksand. The Academy caters to young adults from diverse backgrounds, including young parents, LGBTIQ+ youth, and those facing unique challenges. School Principal Sally Lasslett spoke of their ‘Wellbeing for Learning – Learning for Wellbeing’ model and how to be inclusive we must start with wellbeing first – a child who is anxious about where they will sleep that night will not be focused on learning, and so their wellbeing concerns must be addressed and remedied first. We discovered different approaches to ‘Learning’ through design: how students learn, how teachers teach, and the role school community plays with a site tour to Xavier College year 7 and 8 Kostka Building by MGS Architects. Learning spaces were framed with social connection at the core of the concept, with carefully scaled learning neighbourhoods to support informal learning in a variety of learning styles, from small groups and individuals to full classes and year levels. In exploring the role ‘place’ has, Dr. Jos Boys Honorary Associate Professor Knowledge Lab, Institute of Education, University College London presented a Keynote address on enabling more equitable learning environments. Dr Boys’ research has shown spatial constraints may impact behaviour, but equally can be unrelated. Dr Boys posed the idea that instead of asking “how can we make people belong?”, perhaps we should ask “what is causing them harm?”. Shaw Contract were proud to sponsor and attend the conference with our associates from Perth, Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne. Our stand provided a moment of respite in the conference breaks, offering 3-minute massages and an opportunity to learn more about our points of ambition. Our stand also embodied our promise – People Together, Planet Forever, and our call to action – Neutral is Not Enough, with delegates encouraged to take a friendship bracelet and make a promise to join us in being good stewards to each other and the planet.

“The key word that came out of Green Building Day Perth was collaboration, and more importantly, that we need to implement it at every stage.” - Green Building Council of AustraliaOn Wednesday this week, Shaw Contract was a proud supporting partner of the Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Building Day event in Perth. Our own Dave Moolman presented “Circularity at Scale”; a deep dive into our 24-year journey practising a regenerative,closed-loop approach to sustainability through Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute design and the Australian Resilient Flooring Association Inc Resiloop product stewardship scheme. Dave reminded us that sustainability is a bit like a Rubik's Cube, you can't just solve one side.Shona Gatenby, Sustainability Lead AECOM presented a case study on the Heritage Lanes building and precinct at 80 Ann Street in Brisbane; by Mirvac & Woods Bagot. This project is now the first in the world to achieve a 6 Star Green Star Buildings certified rating.Shaw Contract was thrilled to provide low embodied carbon carpet tiles for this project to help reach Upfront Carbon credit goals, and even more importantly to provide a path for future reclamation to ensure our flooring is recycled and diverted from landfill at the end of its useful life.Gregory Stretch at Built. and Ashleigh Morris (GAICD), CEO and Co-founder of Coreo explored the concept of designing for disassembly. “To achieve national sustainability targets and create a regenerative future, modern building practices require a paradigm shift that considers disassembly with the same engineering, innovation and thoughtfulness as their construction”- Built & Coreo.Finally, we’d like to extend our congratulations to this year’s WA Green Star Champions- Congratulations to Mathuran Marianayagam, Head of Building Performance services at Cundall, and Keith Lucas, ARA, AIA, LEED AP, Managing Director of Sentinel Australia.
