Postgraduate programs (coursework) require students to have completed their bachelor's degree from Australia or international equivalent, in a relevant subject. However, there may be specific requirements for different courses, as well as for any higher degrees by research.

However, some La Trobe courses may need a higher level of English language proficiency than these minimum scores.
While IELTS scores are the primary measure of English proficiency for La Trobe, the university may accept tests other than IELTS if the student's overall score is the equivalent of the required IELTS score. These tests include:
- TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT)
- Pearson Test of English – Academic (PTE)
