PRESIDENTS END OF SUMMER LETTER The beautiful fall colors are appearing and our summer of 2013 is disappearing, but it was a great summer. As an organization we have grown and expanded our horizons as well as established ourselves in new digs and venues. It was tough leaving Sherwood as that has been home for so long, however, Hiawatha was generous and accommodating and the Deer River township hall was perfect for our needs especially since it was air conditioned and one of our hottest nights of the summer. We missed seeing Gunny but she did make it out to the lake once and is comfortable in her home in town.

The lake study yielded some unexpected news such as too much phosphorous and de-‐oxygenated areas of the lake, but it substantiated the fact that we are still one of the cleanest lakes in the area. We hope the MN Pollution Control Agency will clean up the areas that have the foulest run offs by going up stream and attempting to locate the source of the pollutants and clean them.

All the clubs functioned smoothly and the organizers deserve a vote of thanks. The cleanup efforts on Bear Island and the roads could have used more participants but the results were great. We are looking for a new Bar B. Q. coordinator as well as someone to run the frolic and help with the Deer Lake gift shop. Thank you to all of you that were on the board or acted as officers or coordinators of events and clubs. Your efforts are the reason our organization is doing so well. Have a great winter and dream of the warm days and the loons calling on our precious Deer Lake. Doug Routt

RESULTS OF 2013 ROCK BASS TOURNAMENT

The annual Deer Lake rock Bass Tournament was a big success in spite of the inclement weather. With thunderstorms threatening to strike and solid green precipitation showing constantly on every ones hand held mobile weather device almost 70 brave souls threw caution to the wind and made their way to Sherwood dock to enter this year’s gala. Everyone was a winner whether they caught the most or the biggest because of the generosity of Chris Vogl who provided copious free giant cookies from Subway and Ben Kellin owner of Bens Bait shop who provided everyone with a tackle box filled with jig heads, lures, and spinners. The categories of age groups had to be shifted somewhat because of a disproportion of teen entrants.

Winners in the 0-‐6 age group were Hayden Kennell with 35 and Paddy Murphy with a wriggling 10 oz red eye. The 6-‐12 year olds was topped by Sophie Steele bagging 28 and Quinten Bushyager snagging the denizen of the tourney a whopping 13 oz. Teens surprisingly large

category was won by Wesley Mann with a count of 63 and Tori Routt caught the heaviest at 10 oz. The Pros division was won by Jay Swanson with 41 and Cal Huntley netted a 10 oz. All victors got rods and reels.

In all it was a great success and you can all anticipate more Large and small mouth bass and walleyes as we collectively gleaned more than 2000 red eyes from our bountiful lake.

DEER LAKE ASSOCIATION INFORMAL BBQ’S – 2014

The BBQ’s are usually held on the 2nd Wednesday of June through September but this year we have found it necessary to change the August date as the DLA Frolic would be the day before the BBQ. We are looking for a Chair Person to take over organizing these events for the Association. We have been fortunate to have volunteers to host and co-host each of these in the past but someone needs to arrange this with past and future volunteers, send out the monthly email and take RSVP’s so the hosts and co-hosts know how many to expect. IF YOU CAN FIND THE TIME TO TAKE ON THIS JOB IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. If we do not find people who will volunteer to assist in doing this then we probably will not be able to have any more BBQ’s. That would be a shame, as over 60 people attend these all summer – it is one of the most popular events and it sure helps bring lake residents together. PLEASE SEE IF YOU CAN ASSIST IN THIS AREA AND LET YOUR PRESIDENT, DOUG ROUTT KNOW AT: [emailprotected] We ask you to bring your meat, beverage and a passing dish (see below). The hosts and/or co-hosts will furnish limited appetizers, tables, grills, ice, paper plates, cups and utensils.

The tentative dates are:

June 11th -‐ July 9th – August 6th – September 10th

DEER LAKE ASSOCIATION BEST BALL GOLF SCRAMBLE SCHEDULE 2014

Held on the 3rd Tuesday at a different golf course each month. Teams are made up from those who RSVP by a WEEK BEFORE THE EVENT. Each player puts $1 into the prize pot. Game rules vary to accommodate all levels of golfers. Golfing is followed by either dinner at the golf

course or a BBQ at a players home.

Co-Chairmen are Jim & Trish Bogenrief’ and Gerry & Joan Ratzlaff

Please RSVP and do everything possible not to cancel as it makes team assignments extremely difficult – Thank you and look forward to golfing TOGETHER!! Dates are:

June 17th – July 15th – August 19th – September 6th

BEAR ISLAND CLEANUP 2014 SCHEDULE

The Bear Island Clean-‐up is again being coordinated by Bob Baker. The day will be the first Friday of June through September with the rainout date being the following day, with the exception of July where we will wait until after the holiday weekend. If the weather is bad then you can call The Baker’s at 398-‐1999 to see if he is still planning to go on that day. Bob will NOT be calling people – just show up at 9 AM by the DNR sign and bring either pruning shears, loppers, small saws or chain saw (your choice and if you do not have any of these just bring your body and a trash bag). WE HOPE TO SEE YOU!!! Dates are:

June 6th -‐– July 11th -‐-‐-‐ August 1st -‐– September5th

Volunteers

The Deer Lake Association activities that we all enjoy functioned smoothly due to the volunteers that put in their time and effort into making sure that association members enjoy the activities. Several of these volunteers would appreciate being relieved by other members. The following positions are looking for members to take them over:

Deer Lake Frolic-‐ This is currently run by Tom Kleinkauf who is willing to help the new chairman in the transition phase. Please contact Tom at Thomas Kleinkauf [emailprotected]

Deer Lake BBQ-‐ We will now begin to look at next year beginning with a search for a new coordinator for the DLA BBQ's .Trish Bogenrief is retiring from this job after 11 or 12 years and hopes that someone else will take this over. The BBQ's have grown significantly in the past few years and enjoy between 40 attendees in June and September to over 60 in July and August. The new coordinator will have a copy of the list of past attendees, which greatly helps in letting the hosts and co-hosts know how many to plan for. This is the list that is sent a reminder, in addition to the newsletter and DLA Website information. In the past, if the people on this list have not sent an RSVP (one way or the other), then they received a call to determine if they would attend. That way our hosts always had a good count and we were able to adjust the potluck contributions evenly (as several people were flexible enough to change if needed). The new coordinator would have one or two people to assist with the monthly phone calls (which hopefully would be small as people will help by either replying to the reminder or calling to RSVP). The job consists of sending the yearly schedule to the DLA newsletter and website coordinators for publication -- obtaining the hosts and co-hosts for each of the BBQ's -- sending out a monthly reminder to the "list" and coordinating the phone call information to be passed on to the Host/co-hosts. PLEASE CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING FOR THIS IMPORTANT ROLE - IT IS ONE OF THE MAIN EVENTS OF THE DEER LAKE ASSOCIATION AND HELPS TO KEEP US A "LAKE FAMILY"! If you are interested in helping = call or email Doug Routt, President of the DLA at 246-9694 or [emailprotected]. Thank you!!!

Deer Lake Boutique- This is currently run by Elise Widen who is looking for a volunteer to help her in managing the gift shop. Please contact Elise or Doug Widen at [emailprotected]

DLA Loon info by Joan Ratzlaff What would our lake experience be without the call of the loon. The loon count in July was 41 adults and 9 chicks that hatched. 2 eggs were lost off a platform. We have been fortunate enough to have 4 sets of twins hatched on the loon platform that is located in Comfort Cove since it was placed there 4 years ago. Unfortunately we lost both of the chicks this year. The first one died when he was 4 weeks old on the 4th of July. In addition to the fireworks and heavy watercraft traffic, we had an ongoing drama playing out as another male loon wanted the platform and territory of the parents. This loon had attacked our male loon and they fought on several occasions. On this day he actually stabbed the one chick with his beak and he died shortly thereafter. The parents then took the other baby chick out of the Cove and had him stay under the docks on Bonnie Point. The "bad" loon continued his attack so the parents stayed away from the remaining baby most of the time. We do not know exactly what happened but about 2 weeks later he was gone. Maybe an eagle or muskie got it or it just starved to death or drowned. We have had lots of watercraft coming inside the 150 yards off of any dock or shoreline. This creates a lot of wave action and the baby loons have problems staying out of the way. It was sad to lose them and we sure hope next year will be better!!! Joan also contributed a lot of good information on loons and how to interact and protect them. This information will be included in the spring newsletter.

ROAD CLEANUP The 2013 road cleanup is over with pictures of the volunteers below. Thanks to all those who gave their time. The schedule for 2014 will be in the spring newsletter with thanks to Barbie Glader for organizing this effort. Rob Baker, Rich Anderson, George & Pat Ritzinger, Jim &Trish Bogenreif, Jerry & Joan Ratzlaf, and Kerry Glader! (Not pictured Dave & Margot Chatterton)

2013 Firewise Program

As we experience another year of large, raging wildfires in the news, you can be gratified that every twig in our Firewise piles helps. The Deer Lake Association Firewise community had more than 30 families participate in each of the two collections held in July and September. We are part of a larger collection of nearby communities that participate in Firewise: Bowstring, Morse Township, Deer River Township, Prairie Lake Area, Wabana Chain of Lakes Association, Suomi Area, Tioga, Feeley Township, and Turtle Lake Association. More information about the Firewise program can be found online at www.firewise.org.

A special thanks goes out to Bill Brink of the Deer River fire department for educating these communities and organizing volunteers to handle the pile pick-‐ups. And kudos to our chief Deer Lake Association Firewise representative, Joan Ratzlaff, for her time and effort in efficiently managing meeting displays, communications, form distribution, and compilation and submission of participant names

We want to thank you, the participants, for your hard work and patience with the process. We strive to continually improve the process. Working together we are making a safer environment around our dear lake.

Diana Lieffring Joan Ratzlaf

The DLA extends a big THANK YOU to:

• Bill Brink, our Itasca County Firewise Coordinator, • Joan Ratzlaff, our DLA Firewise liaison and list taker, and • Diana Lieffring, back-‐up liaison and support.
