Patricia Gray Terry, age 57, of Goldsboro, formerly of Aulander, died Friday, April 08, 2011 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro.
She was born May 11, 1953 in Martin County to the late Hugh Morgan Terry and Isabelle Bullock Hollis.
She was a Food Inspector for 21 years for the USDA and a member of the Aulander Baptist Church.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, April 10, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Ashley Memorial Chapel at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie. Rev. Mike Coble will officiate. Burial will follow in Aulander Cemetery.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband Michael Terry, a son John Terry and his wife Beth of Raleigh, a grandchild Piper, sisters, Marcella Wynn of Robersonville, Elizabeth Coble of Laurinburg and Dean Mobley of Liberal, Kansas.
The family will receive friends following the service on Sunday at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

George Robert Jenkins

George Robert Jenkins, age 82, of Ahoskie, died Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Pinewood Manor Nursing Home.
George was born December 6, 1928 in Hertford County to the late Carrie Earley Jenkins and James Pettie Jenkins and was the husband of the late Helen Ward Jenkins.
Mr. Jenkins was a US Army Korean War veteran he also worked for the N.C. Department of Transportation for highway maintenance.
He was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Ahoskie Cemetery. Rev. Robert May will officiate.
Left to cherish his memory, is a step-daughter; Alice Skinner and husband Jerry of Aulander; grandchildren; Judy Boseman and husband Wayne of Macclesfield, Jeff Matthews and wife Heather of Ahoskie; great-grandchildren; Daniel Boseman, Kayla Boseman, and Katie Matthews.
He was preceded in death by a great-grandson Clint Boseman.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 8:30 PM at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie.
Aubrey Leon Rountree

Aubrey Leon Rountree, age 73, of the 100 Block of Taylor Rd. in Harrellsville, died Friday, April 15, 2011 at his home.
He was born May 12, 1937 in Hertford County to the late Aubrey Luther Rountree and Ruth Lucille Lowe Rountree.
He was a member of Christian Harbor Baptist Church, a member of the Army National Guard, an avid gardener and a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Monday, April 18, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Christian Harbor Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Harrellsville Cemetery. Rev. Hugh Mizelle and Rev. Mark Hall will officiate.

Vernon Clarence Bess

Ahoskie -Vernon Clarence Bess, age 93, of the 500 block of NC Hwy 561 East, Ahoskie, died Friday April 15, 2011 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.
Mr. Bess was born in Hertford County, on August 29, 1917 to the late Benny Bess and Sallie Garris Bess.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ahoskie and was a member of the Radio Bible Class.
He was a US Army veteran serving in World War II and the Korean War. He worked as a machinist at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Shop #31.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 19 years, Edith Harrell Hollowell; son Robert C. "Bobby" Bess and his wife June of Gaithersburg, MD; step-son Benjamin Keith Hollowell of Greenville, NC, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Margaret Nowell Bess; sister Lessie Sawyer and brothers Willie Cecil Bess, Jesse Bess, Lonnie D. Bess, Russell Bess and Ned Earl Bess.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday April 18, 2011 at 4:00 PM in the Ashley Memorial Chapel at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie. Rev. Daniel Glaze and Rev. Robert May will officiate. Burial will be private in Highland Memorial Gardens.

Thomas L. Cherry

After battling cancer for eight years, on April 16, 2011, Thomas L. Cherry died peacefully, at his home, surrounded by his four children.
June 5, 1928, Thomas was born in Lewiston, NC, to Sallie Peele and Leslie Humphrey, who died in 1932. They moved to Ahoskie, in 1938 when his mother married J. Carlton Cherry.
He is a graduate of Ahoskie High School, Fishburne Military Academy, and Wake Forest University where he earned his BS and JD degrees. He practiced law with his father J. Carlton Cherry for over 35 years.
With a great love for his community, he enjoyed serving as a member and past president of the Ahoskie Jaycees, past president of the Ahoskie Rotary Club, A Paul Harris Fellow, past president of the Ahoskie Chamber of Commerce and legal counsel for the town of Ahoskie, as well as counsel for the N.C. Jaycees. He was a brother member of the Masonic Lodge No. 684 when he recently received his pin for 50 years of service. He was raised to Roanoke Chowan Shrine.
He proudly served his country during the Korean War.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie where he taught the Fellowship Sunday School class for over 15 years.
Being an avid sportsman, he enjoyed spending his free time playing golf at Beechwood, and hunting and fishing on the Chowan and in the Atlantic Ocean. He loved being the captain of his boat, fishing, pulling the kids skiing. Spending time in the North Carolina mountains brought him much pleasure and inspiration as he wrote poetry. Tom Cherry loved spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife of 53 years, Patricia W. Cherry. He is survived by his four children: Susan C. Keel and husband Ernie of Ahoskie, Anne C. Price and husband Hal of Clinton, Gail C. Richardson and husband Jack of Wilmington, Thomas Carlton Cherry of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and seven grandchildren: Braxton, Ian and Logan Kinlaw, Walt and Landis Joyner and Leslie and Paul Richardson.
A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at graveside on April 21st at 5PM at the Ahoskie Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In case of rain, the service will be at Garrett-Jones Funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society Research 930 Wellness Dr # B Greenville, North Carolina 27834.
Dorothy Marks Powell

Dorothy Marks Powell, of 401 Circle Drive, Ahoskie, N.C., died in her home on April 15, 2011. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, April 20 at 2:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Ahoskie with the Reverends Richard Rice and Robert Clarke conducting.
Born in Tillery, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Charles Fox Marks and Jennie Sewell Marks and the widow of Allen Thurman Powell, Jr., who died in 1974. Her sister, Marjorie Marks, died in 1947.
She is survived by her sister Jennie Marks Delagrange of Scotland Neck, N.C. She is also survived by her sons Allen Whitaker Powell of Raleigh and Russell Christopher Powell of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughters-in-law Elizabeth Tayloe Powell of Raleigh and Mary Phetteplace Powell of Las Vegas; grandchildren Emma Whitaker Powell of Raleigh; Russell Christopher Powell, Jr. of New Haven, Conn., Thomas Whitaker Powell of Boone, N.C., Jack Allen Powell of Wilmington, N.C., Myers Christian Paulsen of Reno, Nev. and Lauritz Gaines Paulsen of Las Vegas.
Mrs. Powell, a retired English teacher, graduated from Scotland Neck High School and received her undergraduate degree in English and History from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and her graduate degree from East Carolina University.
In her teaching career she was Chairman of the English Department at the former Ahoskie High School and later at Roanoke-Chowan Community College.

One of the joys of her life was her contact with young people, both in and out of the classroom. Many of her closest friends were former students with whom she loved to keep in touch.
She was a faithful member of the Ahoskie First Presbyterian Church where she served in numerous capacities including Sunday School teacher and as an Elder. She worked tirelessly on behalf of others and will be missed by all.
Her family expresses deep appreciation for the love and sympathy shown by all during this time of loss. Her sons Whit and Chris give thanks to all and a special thanks to Mrs. Russell P. (Emma) Martin for a lifetime of love and devotion to their dear Mother.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 til 8:00 PM at the home, 401 Circle Drive in Ahoskie.
Melvin E. Shores

AULANDER Melvin Emles Shores, age 84, of the 300 block of St. John-Millennium Road, died peacefully on Sunday, April 24, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Shores was born on November 5, 1926, in Hertford County, NC, a son of the late Garland and Katie Lassiter Shores.
He was a retired farmer, and was retired from the NC Department of Transportation.
He was an active member of St. Johns Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and Sunday school superintendent. Melvin was also very active in the community, being a member of the Davie Masonic Lodge # 39 AF & AM, the New Bern Sudan Shrine Temple, and was a member and former chief of the St. Johns Volunteer Fire Department. He also served as an auxiliary deputy sheriff for Hertford County under Sheriff Bunch and Sheriff Baker.
He was the widower of Clara Lassiter Shores, who preceded him in death in 2008.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Rosa Shores Mizelle and husband, Terry Carroll Mizelle of Colerain; his son, Johnny Ray Shores and his wife, Barbara Frazier Shores of Lewisburg, WV; his sisters Becky Blowe and husband, Harvey of Millennium; and Annette Blowe and husband, Henry of St. Johns; and brothers, Jessie Shores and Haywood Shores, both of Millennium. Mr. Shores is also survived by his grandchildren, Christopher Brent Mizelle and wife, Jan, Stephanie Mizelle Capehart and husband, Cadmus, Jonathan Ray Shores, and Stephen Michael Shores; and his great-grandchildren, Perry Mizelle and Claire Mizelle. Besides his parents and loving wife, he was predeceased by siblings, Bobby, Peggy, Elwood and Irvin Shores.
A celebration of life service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at St. Johns Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gilbert Crawford and Rev. Taylor Latham officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Monday, and other times at the home. Robert Thomas Oliver Sr.
Devoted husband, father and grandfather
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Mr. Robert Thomas Oliver Sr., 66, of Roanoke Rapids, was called into the presence of the Lord on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001.
Mr. Oliver was retired from Champion International Paper Company with 39 years of service. He was a former employee of The Federal Bureau of Investigation. Thomas, a devoted family man, made great contributions to the American Red Cross and was instrumental in establishing the Gallon Club of which he had given in excess of 30 gallons. In 1994 he was awarded the Melvin T. Blassingham Jr. Award for a Distinguished Volunteer of the American Red Cross, Mid Atlantic Region. He was the recipient of the 1998 Governors Volunteer Award.
He was preceded in death by his father, William F. Oliver.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lillian Lancaster Oliver of the home; two children, Robert T. Oliver Jr. (Butch) and his wife, Lisa, and Keith N. Oliver and his wife, Dean; his mother, Essie Oliver Ivey of Pinewood Manor Resthome in Ahoskie; his brothers, Willard Oliver and his wife, Erlene, and Charles Oliver and his wife, Ann, all of Roanoke Rapids, and Billy Oliver and his wife, Betsy, of Gambrills, Md.; his sisters, Mildred Tippett and her husband, Lloyd, of Washington, N.C., and Margaret Draper and her husband, Wilborne, of Roanoke Rapids; his grandchildren, "the apples of his eye," Sara, Tommy, Corey and Laura Oliver, all of Roanoke Rapids; his brothers-in-law, Sankey Lancaster and his wife, Vickie, Leroy Lancaster, Donald Lancaster, and Ronald Lancaster and his wife, Robin; his sisters-in-law, Martha L. Mullen, Shirley Powell and her husband, J.D., and Alice Darlington and her husband, Jimmy; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., today, Sept. 23 at Good News Baptist Church, where Thomas was a member. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross.
