Susan Smith felt abused by her former husband, troubled about her love affairs and "obviously distraught" and sorrowful about drowning her two young sons, a state investigator testified in her murder trial Thursday. Asked if Ms.

Smith showed remorse during her Nov. 3 confession, Pete Logan had no doubt. "Probably the greatest I've seen in 35 years," Logan replied, describing Ms. Smith's heaving sobs after she told of letting her car roll into a lake with her sons strapped inside. Ms. Smith could be executed if convicted of murdering the boys, 3-year-old Michael Smith and 14-month-old Alex. After they vanished on Oct. 25, she concocted a story about a black carjacker and held to it for nine days, then confessed. Prosecutor Tommy Pope rested his case an hour into the third day of state testimony.

Thursday's only prosecution witness was Dr. Sandra Conradi, who performed an autopsy on the boys and determined they drowned. Logan, the first defense witness, appeared as a prosecution witness during a hearing, but was not called to testify for the state with the jury present.
